Few who get engaged would take the time to contemplate the mathematics of falling in love; but it is at the heart of all. If X met Y at Z what equals what?

Rough diamonds are cut into beautiful shapes according to precise measurements and formulae, dictated by the original shape of the stone. The sole aim is to get the best possible cut to show off the brilliance and sparkle of the stone without losing too much of the original.

Round, cut diamonds are by far the most popular choice for engagement rings, but this cut has only been available since 1919. Surprisingly, it was the result of a mathematical thesis devised by Marcel Tolkowsky of a Belgian diamond-cutting family.

The mathematical formula stated the angles and dimensions of the various facets of diamonds and set the percentage diameter of the table diameter (53%) to the girdle diameter. The girdle diameter is the measurement around the widest part of diamonds and the table is the flat surface on top. The crown height, that is the height of the table from the girdle, is set as a percentage (16.2%) of the girdle diameter. The pavilion is the depth below the girdle (43.1%) to the culet, the lowest point of the loose diamond.

Conflict or ‘blood’ diamonds are those sold on the black market to fund wars against legitimate governments, particularly in the central and western African states of Sierra Leone, Angola and Liberia.

Since 2000, the global diamond industry has worked ceaselessly with the United Nations to eradicate conflict diamonds. At the turn of the century 99% of diamonds were guaranteed conflict free. This was not good enough, so the adoption of the Kimberley Process Certification System in 2003 ensured that conflict diamonds do not enter the legitimate supply of diamonds. There is also a voluntary System of Warranties adopted by the diamonds industry to ensure that these diamonds sold are conflict free. Only 0.2% of diamonds are conflict traded today, but that is still too many. The global diamonds industry is still working to eradicate this stain on these beautiful stones.
