Know Your Diamonds When Choosing Loose Stones

There is a wide range of diamond engagement rings available to choose from but there are still those couples who prefer to buy a loose diamond so that they can design their own diamond engagement rings. Those that choose this route want to express their own personalities and preferences in a design that reflects their own relationship better than a pre-made ring. However, there are some guidelines you should follow when selecting a loose diamond.

Before You Buy

Before you select your loose diamonds you should have a good idea about the design of your ring. There are certain elements to the design, such as the setting, that can have a huge bearing on the quality of the diamond selected. For example, using a flush or bezel setting may hide minute flaws in the gems which may look undesirable in some of the more open settings.

The choice of metal can also affect the colour of the diamonds. Diamonds of a lower quality tend to have a yellow tinge which will be more pronounced with yellow gold bands. A white gold or platinum setting can be used with the same stones without any issues with the stone colour.

The shape and size of the diamonds should be decided upon before buying loose diamonds. Often jewellers have a varied selection of diamond sizes and shapes, but with prior consideration you can dramatically reduce the amount of time needed to search for the perfect stone.

At Marlows we offer a wide range of loose diamonds and diamond engagement rings.
