Popular myths that surround Engagement Rings

The most popular myth of all is the one that makes the blood of any man considering proposing run icy cold: that one must spend two or three month’s salary on an engagement ring.

Contrary to popular belief – and evidence to the power of advertising – this is not a tradition, but part of an advertising campaign by a well-known jeweller. Ditto is the notion that an engagement ring must be made of diamonds and diamonds alone. In fact, diamonds can be the main feature of an engagement ring, part of a collection of gemstones in the ring or omitted entirely in favour of the bride-to-be’s birthstone to create unique engagement rings.

Diamonds do not have to be as expensive as we are led to believe. The way a diamond is priced is based on its size, grade and clarity and not the shape it is cut, meaning that there should be a diamond for everyone in every price bracket.

Another popular myth surrounding diamonds is that all women want a larger diamond engagement ring on their fingers to flash at their friends. While this may be true of some women, others would be embarrassed and might never wear it. You would hope that most men would have a fair idea of their bride-to-be’s tastes in this department.

This leads us to the final myth surrounding engagement rings; the one that dictates that the ring must be perfect. Of course it would be lovely if the ring was better than anything she could have chosen for herself and if it slipped easily onto her finger…but ultimately, it’s more important that she just says yes!
