What Is Diamond Certification?

When you buy a diamond, it is a significant investment, and you want to be sure of the quality you are buying.

Most people are not diamond experts, but do want to enjoy the beauty of a stone, reassured that it has all the characteristics that they specified when they bought it, whether it be set in an engagement ring or any other diamond jewellery. Even people who work in the diamond trade are not able to grade some diamonds with the naked eye, and need special training to become a fully qualified grader.

A grader is someone who inspects a stone, and says that it is a natural diamond, of a given carat weight, and goes on to identify it as having particular cut, colour, and clarity characteristics. They will also check for fluorescence under ultra-violet light, which can have a negative impact on the value of the stone if strong.

The certification process implemented by Marlows is independent and those certifying the diamonds are neither buying nor selling stones, nor having anything to do with valuation of a diamond. This means they are completely impartial and will give a fair analysis of the diamonds they are checking.

The two laboratories where Marlows diamond certification takes place are the GIA (Gemmological Institute of America), or IGI (International Gemmological Institute). Both will examine stones and then issue a report on all the above factors, so the diamonds can be valued according to the market rate at the time.
