Fashions within diamond settings and metals

Diamond setting choices are usually made when selecting an engagement ring. The first thing to do, when selecting a ring or other piece of jewellery, which has not already been set, is to select the diamond or diamonds. By choosing the stone first, you can focus on the quality.

The main factor in selecting the perfect setting for your diamond is the shape of the stone. Is it big or small, is there just one or more than one? The most popular setting for the solitaire diamonds is the prong setting. This is a simple band with four or six prongs holding the diamond to be displayed on the finger. The bezel setting is a less popular choice for a solitaire diamond as it is less aesthetically pleasing. The bezel is when the metal encases the diamond and overlaps over the top edge holding it in place. It is mainly chosen for people with active lifestyles due to its secure setting.

With multiple diamonds, the channel setting is a popular choice. It consists of a channel in the metal with several diamonds set along. This is often used in wedding rings for both male and female.

Choosing the metal is often a choice of budget than taste. Yellow gold was traditionally known as the marriage metal but its decline in fashion over recent years has seen a growth in the use of white gold and platinum. Both are similar in appearance but white gold is much more cost-effective than platinum.
