Ten Facts About Diamonds

Here are ten facts about diamonds, the diamond industry and diamond engagement rings that we at Marlows would like to share with you:

1. The largest rough diamond ever found is the Cullinan at 3,106.75 carats.It was subsequently cut into nine smaller stones, two of which (the Great and Lesser Stars of Africa) are displayed in the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London.

2. The smallest engagement ring ever made was received by the Princess Mary, eldest daughter of King Henry VIII, in 1518, when she was two years old. Her fiancé was the infant Dauphin, Louis, the son and heir of King Louis 1 of France.

3. The earliest recorded diamond engagement ring was given in 1477. It was given to Mary of Burgundy by Archduke Maximillian of Austria, thus starting the tradition of diamond engagement rings.

4. The Greek name for diamonds is ‘adamas’ meaning ‘invincible’

5. Only diamonds can cut other diamonds.

6. Diamonds are made of carbon.

7. Diamonds are found deep below the earth’s surface at 60 to 120 miles (100 – 200 kilometers).

8. Diamonds are three billion years old, or two thirds the age of the Earth.

9. The Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia is the World’s largest single producer of diamonds.

10. The most unlucky diamond is the Hope Diamond, which was allegedly cursed when it was stolen from an Indian idol. The curse promises death or bad luck, not only to all who own it, but to all who touch it.
