Engagement Etiquette – Part 2

Traditionally, gifts are not expected at an engagement party. They used to be simple affairs with the main goal being to inform friends and family of the happy event, and to show off your shimmering diamond engagement rings, of course! Gifts were presented purely at the wedding to celebrate the day and to help the bride and groom set up their new home together. However, these days, things are more complex. Many couples get engaged and move in together years before they finally get married.

This has made the engagement party a rather complicated and difficult affair for guests. The engaged couple can make life simpler by making their gift expectations clear in the invite.

Offering a token gift

Although engagement etiquette may stipulate no gift giving, there is an argument to say that a token gift is a lovely touch and will delight the bride to be. These gifts will be treasured by the couple and often become much loved keepsakes of the happy event. It needn’t be an expensive gift. A personal touch is to present a photograph in a beautiful frame or to craft a handmade card for the wedding day book.

Gift vouchers

If you are the couple in question and have perhaps already set up home, you may wish to ask for gift vouchers instead to avoid duplicating items within the house. Stipulate any preferred stores rather than leaving the choice open as this will ensure that you can use the gift vouchers to your greatest advantage.
