A diamond might be uniquely tough, but the special qualities of a diamond, such as durability, are what makes them so precious. Therefore, diamonds are vulnerable, particularly to theft or loss. With this in mind, it is particularly important that a diamond is not only properly cared for, but also kept secure. Luckily, there are several ways of doing this.

The immediate advantage that items of jewellery have over larger valuable items is that they are usually – unless you’re really lucky – on the small side. Therefore, they can be stored in vaults or security boxes relatively comfortably. For precious jewellery such as larger diamond white gold rings and multi stone diamond rings this is especially advantageous, as often this kind of jewellery is saved for special occasions.

For engagement rings or wedding rings the situation is slightly different, as the question of security is less about proper storage, as they are items that are likely to be worn frequently, if not permanently.

However, this does not mean that your investment cannot be insured, and you should consider insuring diamond jewellery against loss or theft; remember diamonds might be tough, but they are not completely invulnerable.

Of course, whilst it is the unique beauty and inherent value of a diamond that it vulnerable to theft, it is also what makes it so precious, and is an ideal gift between lovers or friends.

Loose diamonds can be prohibitively expensive, costing up into the millions. One of the most expensive diamond engagement rings ever bought cost the billionaire Donald Trump the equivalent of one million pounds. It was a beautiful, flawless 12 carat emerald cut diamond ring.

The traditional amount to spend on gold engagement rings is two and a half times your monthly salary. However, this may be too much for most people and the best price is the one you can comfortably afford. Some gentlemen prefer to choose the ring themselves and ask for the hand of their beloved on bended knee, keeping it all a wonderful surprise. Others would like to give their fiancée the pleasure of choosing her own ring, or indeed choosing it together. Any of these options are a great idea, as it’s never too early to learn to please your partner and to be aware of her wishes and tastes.

Choosing wedding bands is just as pleasurable, especially as many couples prefer to have matching gold wedding rings. A popular choice is to have matching engagement rings and wedding ring sets. Remember to make sure that the gold you choose is compatible, that it is of the same karat value; otherwise the gold may wear quickly.

We all know that gold is valuable and that’s why we like to buy wedding rings made of gold. It’s the reason why when we choose many types of jewellery, gold is the favourite, whether it is white gold engagement rings, gold earrings or gold engagement rings. But why is gold valuable?

It has always been sought after and prized throughout history, but why is this the case? Cultures ranging from the Native Americans to the ancient Egyptians and the Chinese valued gold for its beauty and its unique characteristics, and when Europeans learned that gold was available in south America the consequences were disastrous for the Aztec people who had lived there for thousands of years.

Gold is valuable simply because a lot of people believe it is. Gold’s value is a cultural phenomenon, its price determined by a complex combination of factors which quite often do not include ‘need’. For example, those cultures – admittedly they are rare – that do not use gold don’t value it, but for cultures such as ours, gold is mainly an investment commodity; a refuge from shaky currencies during tough economic times.

Of course, it also one of the favourite materials from which to make wedding rings and gold earrings. One of the main reasons why gold is valuable is because of its rarity. It has been estimated that all the gold on earth would form a cube measuring just 19 metres. So now you know that the wedding rings you have chosen originate from this tiny stockpile, your rings are even more precious!

Once you have chosen your gold wedding rings or other gold jewellery, you will want to make sure it stays in pristine condition. If you follow a few simple guidelines, your gold will look as good in fifty years time as it did on the day you bought it. There are many ways to make sure that gold engagement rings and gold wedding rings retain that brand new look, and the most important is to always keep gold in a box lined with velvet or satin when you are not wearing it.

Many people use pouches to store their gold earrings and other items, but this not really suitable because the pieces will rub together and this will cause minor erosion to your jewellery. If you are storing more than one gold jewellery item in a box, wrap the smaller pieces in tissue paper as this will help prevent scratching.

As well as making sure you have the right kind of storage, correct cleaning will play a crucial role in caring for gold jewellery. You can use a soft brush for the detailed designs, and very soft cleaning cloths for other pieces.

Once in a while, you may want to drop your gold jewellery into boiling water and a pinch of baking soda. Leave it in for only half a minute, and wipe the piece immediately after pulling it from the water. If you follow these simple guidelines, your gold engagement rings, gold wedding rings and all types of gold will look great for you and the people you pass them on to.
