ENGAGEMENT RINGS
Betrothal rings were first seen during Roman times, but weren't widely used in the Western world until the early 13th century. The first occasion of a diamond ring being used to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in the imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy.
