A Quick Guide to Buying Diamonds

Diamonds may famously be ‘forever’, but that’s certainly not how long you want to be paying for them! If you purchase wisely, you won’t be. Buying precious gems may seem a daunting prospect, but follow a few simple tips and you’ll find the whole thing straightforward, and get the most from your budget.

Don’t listen to pushy salespeople who try and tell you that the size of the diamonds or ring you buy is a statement of how much you love the person you are buying for. Treat buying diamonds as you would any professional transaction, and certainly forget the old cliché that you need to spend at least a month’s salary.

When you are buying diamonds, you will need to think about the size of the jewel, and the carat weight you want and can afford. While 1.0 carat and above is generally considered a good size for diamonds, well-cut jewels of a smaller weight size could be a good alternative. Some people feel it’s worth sacrificing the quality of the jewel in terms of cut, colour and clarity, to have a larger diamond, but that’s a choice only you can make.

Hand size is another factor when making your choice – even small jewels will look larger on slender fingers. If you want to find your sweetheart’s ring size when she’s not looking, you could try and borrow one of her rings and getting it sized, or trace the interior diameter. However, a ring can always be re-sized if you can’t do this.

You may not have thought about buying diamonds online, and you may be wondering whether it is safe to do so. The fact is that diamonds are probably one of the regulated commodities in the world, making purchases over the Internet completely secure. With online jewellers, you can also get some of the most sparkling deals on diamonds, and a more extensive range than you’d get in a High Street shop, which you can browse through at your leisure.

That doesn’t mean you don’t need to choose your supplier wisely, and pick a jeweller with plenty of experience and knowledge about diamonds. You need to buy your diamonds from a jeweller with a strong reputation, who won’t push you into buying something you don’t want. That’s why, as well as the well-known four Cs of buying diamonds – cut, clarity, colour and carat weight – you also need another couple of ‘C’s. One is certification of your diamonds, another is confidence in your jeweller. The best sellers of diamonds know their customers’ trust is earned.
